Hollie, S., & Allen, B. (2018). Culturally and Linguistically

Responsive Teaching and Learning responsive teaching and

learning; classroom practices for student success. Huntington

     Beach: Shell Education.

This is a wonderful resource that focuses on embracing the norms of various cultures in the classroom to create a more inclusive environment.  I have attended a few workshops with Dr. Hollie and his team, and I leave with strategies I can implement in my classroom the next day.

Silver, H. F., Strong, R. W., & Perini, M. J. (2007). The Strategic

Teacher: Selecting the right research-based strategy for every

lesson. Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

This book comes from the Thoughtful Classroom training I attended a few years back.  It provides research based strategies to use for specific types of learning in the classroom (i.e. cause and effect, compare and contrast, etc.).  Another great resource for strategies to utilize right away.

Berckemeyer, J. C., & Silver, D. (2013). Taming of the team: How great teams

work together. Chicago, IL: World Book Inc./Incentive Publications, Inc.

Being asked to work as a team is a constant in education.  This book provides some insight on how to effectively work as a team so time and energy is not wasted.  I love how the anecdotes and humor the author has added throughout the text. Makes for an easy and interesting read!

Silver, D., Berckemeyer, J. C., & Baenen, J. (2015). Deliberate optimism:

Reclaiming the joy in education. Thousand Oaks, CA: Corwin.

Reclaiming the joy in education is exactly what this book aims to do.  It provides the reminders all educators need about why we went into teaching.  It is a good reminder of how teachers should re-frame their thinking in situations that are beyond their control, but also serves as a reminder that relationships and culture are at the core of optimistic classrooms.

Wiseman, R. (2017). Owning up: Empowering adolescents to confront social

cruelty, bullying, and injustice. Thousand Oaks, CA: Corwin, A SAGE

     Publishing Company/AMLE.

If you are responsible for implementing any type of social emotional learning at the middle school level, this really is a must read.  It provides lessons for having the tough conversations many adolescents are dying to talk about.  It is a great support for facilitating these discussions.  Highly recommend!
